Crappie USA Tournament Results For Alabama’s Weiss Lake

This past Saturday March 8th, Crappie USA held a qualifying event on Alabama’s Weiss Lake at Leesburg, Alabama. Anglers from 12 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held October 16th-18th on Lake Cumberland at Summerset, Kentucky.

Semi-Pro Division Results

1st Place SemiPro Grizzly Bonus Mobbs  Teague

“Adam Mobbs and Carlton Teague weighed in 7.12 lbs and earning 1st Place Semi-Pro.”

Taking first place was the Gaylesville, Alabama team of Adam Mobbs and Carlton Teague weighing in 7.12 pounds and earning $1,100.00. They also earned an additional $250.00 winning the Grizzly Coolers Bonus and an addition $300.00 winning the Driftmaster Rod Holder bonus. Adam and Carlton fished multiple area’s on the main lake, pulling jigs at a depth of 23 feet or less. The team caught 60 fish for the day using their B’n’M Poles and black/blue/chartreuse Southern Pro jigs with the blue/chartreuse colors working best.

2nd Place Semi Pro Forrest  Camacho

“Jim Forrest of Centre, Alabama and Paul Camacho of Ft. Payne, Alabama with a weight of 6.98 lbs, 2nd Place Semi-Pro.”

Second place went to the team of Jim Forrest of Centre, Alabama and Paul Camacho of Ft. Payne, Alabama with a weight of 6.98 pounds and earning $650.00. Jim and Paul were spider rigging in Mile Creek and Spring Creek pushing minnows in 7-11 feet of water and catching 100 keeper fish for the day. In Crappie USA events teams are allowed to weigh in their top 7 crappie at the end of the day.

In third place was the team of Donnie Burris of Grandville, Kentucky and Darren Adams of Columbia, Kentucky weighing in 6.87 pounds and earning $450.00. Donnie and Darren pushing blue/chartreuse jigs in Little River 20 feet of waters to catch 60 fish for the day.

Tony Thomas of Fyffe, Alabama and Michael Hardeman of Rainsville, Alabama took fourth place in the Semi-Pro Division with 6.68 pounds. Tony and Michael were fishing 3 Mile Creek, pushing Southern Pro black/blue/chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows in 7 feet of water to catch 50 fish for the day.

Other awards in the Semi-Pro Division were Scott and Crystal Echols of Eva, Alabama won the Ranger Cup Award in the Semi-Pro Division earning $250.00. Jo and Janette Carter of Gilbert, South Carolina won the Talon Bonus earning $250.00.

Amateur Division Results

1st Place Amateur Wilson  Wilson

“Knox and Max Wilson weighed in 7.84 lbs. 1st Place Amateur Divsion.”

First place in the amateur division went to the Centre, Alabama team of Knox and Max Wilson weighing in 7.84 pounds and earn $750.00. Knox and Max were fishing up river, flipping black/blue/chartreuse jigs early in the day then using Scooters Minnows later in the day catch 40, mostly female fish for the day.

Second place went to the team of Stanley Sneed of Cave Spring, Georgia and Hardy Wheeless of Euharrlee, Georgia weighing in 7.73 pounds and earning $500.00. Stanley and Hardy were fishing upriver as well, pushing blue/white jigs tipped with minnows in 2-5 feet of water to catch 40 fish for the day.

Taking third place was the Ft. Payne, Alabama team of Duard and Haley Hulgan with a weight of 7.65 pounds and earning $300.00 along with an additional $140.00 for second big fish of the event with a 1.61 pound crappie. Duard and Haley were spider rigging in 3 mile creek in 5-7 feet of water. The team said, red/green/yellow and black/blue/chartreuse were the best color combinations tipped with 1-2 minnows to catch between 80-100 fish for the day.

Fourth place went to another Ft. Payne team, Ragan Derwood and Kyle Keith weighing in 7.14 pounds and earning $200.00 along with $330.00 for first big fish of the day at 1.85 pounds. Ragan and Kyle were fishing Mud Creek, pushing red/orange homemade jigs with a gold head worked best to catch only 11 keepers for the day.

Fifth place went to the team of Neal Alvis of Rogersville, Tennessee and Scott Bunch of Morristown, Tennessee weighing in 6.54 pounds and earning $150.00 along with $125.00 for the Ranger Cup Award. Neal and Scott fished several locations mid lake pulling black/chartreuse Crappie Magnet jigs part of the time then switched to shooting docks with white/chartreuse Crappie Magnet jigs. The team was fishing in 9 feet of water to catch 20 keepers for the day. Congratulations to all the teams fishing this event. Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event.. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.

Weather-The temperatures were in the 60’s with light wind and full sunshine. This was one of the best tournament days weather wise at Weiss Lake in many years.
