Crappie Crazy Pro Wins Lake of Egypt Tournament

Crappie Crazy Pro Wins Lake of Egypt Tournament

This past Friday & Saturday, March 18 & 19, 2016 Crappie USA held their 2-day, $10,000.00 super event on Lake of Egypt in Marion, Illinois. Over 130 anglers from several different states were competing for not only the $10,000.00 in cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.

Ron Tom Plaques

“1st Place in the Pro Division was Crappie Crazy Pro Staffer Ron Bilbrey (right) of Anderson, Indiana and Tournament partner Tom Hankins (left) of Indianapolis, Indiana.”

Taking 1st Place in the Pro Division was Crappie Crazy Pro Staffer Ron Bilbrey of Anderson, Indiana and Tournament partner Tom Hankins of Indianapolis, Indiana. The team weighed in a two-day weight of 22.13 pounds beating the 2nd place team by a whopping 3.10 pounds. They earned $3,000.00, plus several bonuses, including Big Fish and earning an additional $910.00.

Ron and Tom braved not so great fishing conditions. Temperatures were in the 30’s both days, cloudy on Friday and rainy on Saturday with rain ending around 11:00am. North winds at 15-20mph both days.

We asked Ron to explain the fishing throughout the week and during the tournament. “We arrived to cloudy skies and warm weather. The bite was hot until Tuesday which brought sunny skies. This allowed us to follow our game plan of fishing shallow on cloudy days to locate areas holding the bigger black Crappie then we spent Sunny days using our electronics to locate structure in deeper water that held the bigger white female Crappie. A cold front moved thru the area prior to the tournament slowing the black Crappie bite and pushed the bigger females back off the banks. Friday we slow trolled minnows shallow to get our seven fish then moved to deeper water to find the white Crappie. We slow trolled minnows in deep water to get our bigger whites and weighed in a 2.49 lb. Crappie and a 2.10 lb. Crappie on day one. We thought the rain and cloudy conditions on day two would extend the bite but actually shortened it for us as we fished shallow for about an hour we realized the morning bite was over for us early and we quickly switched to deep water. Over the next six hours we only boated 4 fish, all caught slow trolling double live bait rigs over structure,” Ron explained.

Ron Tom Big Fish

“Big fish of the Tournament was 2.49 lbs. weighed in by Tom and Ron.”

This is not the first tournament win for these guys. They have a consistent history of winning Crappie tournaments. Tom was the Indiana Slab Masters 2011 and 2014 Classic Champion along with many regular season wins and top 3 finishes.

Ron is also a Indiana Slab Masters Classic Champion taking the title in 2013. He has several wins and top 3 finishes with the last win coming in the Summer of 2015 fishing the Crappie USA Cave Run Tournament in Kentucky.

The duo also teamed up to win the Crappie USA Super Event on Lake Cumberland, Kentucky in 2013.

We would also like to congratulate the Crappie Crazy Pro Staff Team of Kirk Wyman and Walter Moore on their 9th Place finish and Crappie Crazy Pro Staffer Bret Cunningham on his 15th Place finish fishing with his tournament partner Brad Petelle.
