Crappie Crazy Pro Staffer Wins ISM Tournament

Bret BrookvilleOn what was supposed to be a nice, warming Spring day turned out to be Winter in Spring. This past Saturday the Indiana Slab Masters braved Winter conditions to see who would be this years Brookville Lake, Indiana tournament winner.

Taking the honors of first place was our very own Pro Staffer Bret Cunningham and his tournament partner Keith Lucas. Bret and Keith braved 20+ mph winds, snowfall and temperatures hovering around 28 degrees in the early morning hours to put together a limit of 7 fish, which was a feat within itself. Of the 26 teams competing only 8 teams came to the scales with the 7 fish limit. Bret describes how the day played out and they captured 1st place.

We started out spider rigging, but the 20+ mph winds just wouldn’t allow it. We switched over to vertical jigging and quickly picked up our first fish in about 8′ of water holding tight to wood. The fish was caught on an orange and chartreuse 1/16 Nothead feather jig. One fish was it. We bounced around from spot to spot and just could not locate fish. The winds started to finally change directions, as forecasted. About 12:30 we decided to go back where we started since the wind wasn’t going to be near as bad as it was in the morning. We started to slowly spider rig live bait rigs on a small flat that appeared to have fish scattered throughout it when we went over it that morning. Once we hit the 9′ flat I picked up a fish almost immediately. Then Kieth has three poles go down at once, managing to boat two of them. The first thing we noticed was that, regardless of the extreme cold front, the fish were eating the biggest baits we had. We quickly switched over to Nothead SpinMore jig heads to gain more flash and size. We continued to work that flat for the next couple hours picking up one fish after another. We were fortunate to find an area that had males that had retreated from the shallows and where females were staging up for the spawn. We managed about 25 good fish in the last couple hours,” say Bret.

Rounding out the top 3 teams was the 2nd place team of Jim Clark and Doug Allen and the 3rd place team of Derrick Johnson and Marty Kraus.
