Reelfoot Lakes Complete Outdoorsman
The Crappie Crazy staff recently got the opportunity to spend some time at Reelfoot Lake, TN. We stayed at Bluebank Resort, and let me tell you, Mike Hayes and his staff are second to none! We had great accommodations and fantastic food! I can’t wait to do it again with Bluebank Resort.
I met Professional Guide, Billy Blakley of Bluebank Resort this past February at the Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show. We hit it off quickly, sharing a common passion, crappie fishing! Like a lot of us, I have seen Billy on past TV shows and videos, catching slabs that give Reelfoot Lake its notoriety as one of the best places to catch crappie. Therefore, it didn’t take me long to book a trip for the Crappie Crazy staff! After a few months, Crappie Crazy, Ricky Bobby, and myself made it to Reelfoot Lake. With much anticipation, I couldn’t wait to fish with Billy, and I immediately figured out why Billy has had so much success crappie fishing. Also, Billy is one of the only “complete outdoors men” I know. The entire time we fished, our conversations wondered from crappie fishing to duck hunting, and deer hunting to chasing those Tennessee long beards! Not to mention, “good ole boy” stories from Indiana and Tennessee. It really doesn’t get much better than that!
Billy started fishing on Reelfoot Lake when he was a Freshman in high school. It didn’t take Billy long before he was guiding clients from Bluebank. With a grin, Billy admitted that he would play hooky from school sometimes so he could take clients out fishing. It’s with all of that experience that makes Billy one of the finest guides on Reelfoot Lake. I truly learned a lot on how the fish, relate to structure, and just how fertile Reelfoot Lake really is. Billy is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to hunting and fishing. The great thing about Billy Blakley is that he doesn’t claim to fish a certain way better than anyone nor does he stick to any certain technique. After asking him his favorite way to catch slabs, his quick response was, “Whatever catches fish is my favorite way. It might be spider rigging today and flippin’ a jig tomorrow”. In Billy’s words, “Let the fish tell ya how they want caught.” If one technique isn’t working, be versatile and switch it up. Keep an open mind and keep working on presentations and areas on the lake that you think will change your luck.
As mentioned in another article, the wind would not let up so we had to be flexible. Billy really shined by changing locations and techniques on the fly. We had a couple of days that were not the best fishing conditions, but Billy kept working at it, and put us on some quality fish.
The next time you’re thinking of taking a trip to Reelfoot Lake, be sure to hit up Billy Blakley at Bluebank Resort. No matter if you’re duck hunting or wanting to catch slabs, call the complete outdoorsman, Billy Blakley.
Again, I want to thank Billy for sharing his boat with me, and I look forward to fishing with him again very soon.
