Back To Back Crappie Crazy Wins

Patoka Lake, Indiana played host to the Crappie USA Event this past Saturday, May 14, 2016. Over 65 anglers from 6 states were competing for not only the $5,100.00 in cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held October 27 – 29, 2016 on Kentucky & Barkley Lakes at Paris, Tennessee.

Taking 1st place honors in the Pro Division was Crappie Crazy Pro Staffer Bret Cunningham and tournament partner Brad Petelle. The team braved morning rain and chilly conditions, with temperatures only reaching the high 30’s. Bret explains how they won the tournament, “We started the morning looking for remaining pre-spawn females. Due to decent water visibility, we intended to target fish by casting and swimming jigs in and around cover. Small fish were being caught with regularity. Finally after about 30 minutes and 30-40 fish, we boated a 1.37 lb. Crappie.

That is the approach that we would continue for the rest of the day. Our third spot was just an old lay down that extended out into 9-10′. After 15 or so Crappie, we caught another good fish. Maybe a cast or two later, another good fish comes on board. It took quite a few more casts, but we left that spot with one more solid fish. We bounced around the lake for the rest of the day doing the same thing. We slowly upgraded some smaller fish that we had in the livewell to fill our 7 fish limit. With about 15 minutes to go, we were trolling from one spot to another and I was just flipping the bank hoping for a miracle. Just as I’m about to bring the bait out of the water, another decent fish hammers my jig. That put us well over 6 lbs and we figured we may have had a chance at a check. You just never know what kind of day everyone else had and that day was pretty tough, according to the weights.

Chartreuse Nothead jigheads in 1/16 oz. with yellow and white curly tails, proved to be the best bait of the day.”

Also making strong finishes at the Patoka Lake tournament was Crappie Crazy Pro Staffer Ron Bilbrey and tournament partner Tom Hankins with 4th place and 2nd place big fish. This 4th place finish by Ron and Tom comes after a 1st place finish one week earlier fishing the Crappie USA Mississinewa & Salamonie Tournament. The Crappie Crazy Pro Staff Team of Kirk Wyman and Walter Moore also had a strong finish placing 5th in the Pro Division.
